Communion from a heretical priest
Thursday, on "Catholic Answers Live", a caller told Jimmy Akin about a priest who left the Church and started his own church and continued consecrating the bread. Jimmy Akin said it was still a valid Eucharist. What's going on?
In all these cases, if the proper form (words) and matter (unleavened bread) are used, the Mass is still valid but is probably illicit. As to laymen participating in this man's Mass: If they know this priests status, especially through the declaration and notice of a bishop, and they still participate, they would be in mortal sin because of disobedience. In this case it is questionable that their Communion, though vailid, is efficacious.
